Old JD plows with Syracuse bottoms

I've got a set of 3 bottom, 14" JD plows with Syracuse bottoms. The moldboards are badly worn and the plow points are expensive to replace and break easily in the stoney ground we have here. I was wondering if anyone has changed the bottoms for newer ones that use a bolt on plow point. I can get some in very good shape for a good price that use the four bolt plow point. Has anyone ever done this and if so does the plow work OK aferwards?

The bolt pattern on all JD plow standards was the same until they brought out the metric plows in the late 70's. I have changed a plow from syracuse to high speed bottoms and they do a poor job of covering trash but you can buy parts easy and cheap.

Thanks for that tip ET! I have a model 66 JD 4-16 with the old type fitted shares. I take it that I could take the wear parts and frog from say a f145 plow and they will bolt up to my beams?

Thats right the whole bottom will bolt right on and you can probably get somthing out of the old bottoms for parts.

ET, I am not up on the JD plows, is there an easy way to distinguish the metric bottoms?

They started metric plows around 1980 I'm not sure of model numbers. The hardware is all metric on those plows.

Changing to the HS-series "throw-away" bottoms Deere used from the 50s to the 70s means you need to change the frog and the sole, which is what all your wear parts bolt to. Bolt patterns from the frog/sole to the beam should be the same. Deere offered the plows in the early 50s with the option of either the Syracuse bottoms or the HS "high-speed" bottoms. I have seen 44H plows in both versions. You will probably have to re-learn how to adjust the plow, because the HS bottoms have different "suck" than the Syracuse bottoms.
