Does anyone know of a source (web site, book, etc) where I can find information on old horse drawn implements. I have an old dump rake and single bottom plow and may soon have a single row planter, sickle mower, disc, and stalk cutter which I intend to restore. These all have seats for riding. I would like to identify the manufacturer of each piece and find out the original colors.

BB,

As far as I know there are no websites that deals with only the horse drawn equipment. Beleave me, I have been trying to find one for a while.

With that said, I'm in the process of building a website for folks that collect equipment that was pulled by hay burners. It's nowhere near usable for folks yet but if you would like a quick look at the front page of it follow the link below.

Untill it is up and running, feel free to post some of the casting numbers from your equipment and I'll be happy to look through my manuals to see if I can help identify what you have.

Thanks Houndman. I saved the link to your site.

I bought a book from amazon.com titled Identifying Horse Drawn Implements, but it was no help at all. I also stumbled on a web site called ruralheritage.com that has a bookstore. In the bookstore is a book called Encyclopedia of American Farm Implements and Antiques. The description says it has black and white photos of 2000 implements and a few color pages. Do you know anything about this book? It list for $24.95.

BB,

I have this book myself. If you are interested in the history of horse equipment you will find it interesting. It does have 14 pages of color pictures of older equipment. (They look to be from old ads.) Everything else is in black and white and I'm willing to bet there are over 2000 pictures in it from hog oilers to windmills. Who knows, from one of the pictures in the book, you may be able to ID what you have.

I went to Amazon.com and found it listed there for around $18.00. It's called the Encyopedia Of American Farm Implements & Antiques by C. H. Wendel.

Hope this helps,

Houndman

Hey Houndman & BB;
Got this link from one of my posts about updated manure spreaders. Found it interesting so I saved it.

HM - perhaps y'all could provide links to ea. other. The link is also part of the Draft Horse Web Ring.

The link idea is next on my list but I don't really want to do that untill I have it up and running. I've had the website for going on a year now and need another 10 hours in the day to have the time to work on it properly. The toughest part of making it is the data base for all the part numbers from the manuals I have. That way all a person has to do is type in the casting number and see what the item is called and what it fit onto.

If and when I do have it going properly I'll be sure to give a shout on this board.

Hi, made the suggestion awhile back about a site like yours, glad to see someone is doing just that! Though I'm not a horse entusiast, don't get me wrong, I like horses, as long as they're in someone elses pasture, would surely like to see this venue persued, as farming with horses and tractors overlapped by a lot of years, more so in some areas than others. I just cought the "tail" end of the horse era in my district, lots of good memories, and a few of the others too. Lots of luck, have a gooder, R.E.L.

Grover

I don't mind the hay burners but I'm not home enough to care for them properly and with the iron I can go away for a few days and not have to worry any. Unless someone want's to "borrow" a cast iron tool box lid from one of my mowers. :-)

If I want to play with one of my toys I load it up and take it to one of the Amish in my area. They are more than happy to test it out and save the wear and tear on there own equipment.
