I have a MF31 as well, it cuts fairly well, but very slow, I put in new bar and many new guards this year. It has broken about everything but the main crankshaft, and every 2 hours, I need to grease everything. I was ready to trash it and buy a disc mower (how to pay for it is another thing), when it broke again this year. It has a wheel and pulley instead of a pittman. I have never been able to mow at the speeds suggested at on the owners manual.

I have an MF 32 mower which has been doing a good job for me. Is the 31 the one without a pitman ?
My 32 has a pitman.

The 31 is a damn good machine overall the machine is worth 400 to 500 dollars, I have always found parts for the machine, You can buy the blade at a CT Farm and Family Center for less then a $100 bucks, the crank saft can be fixed with the help of a machine shop. Its a good mower i used one for several years cutting about 200 acres overall with it, with no problems other then a new blade and belt, if u keep it greased, and dont run it ragged it will last damn near forever, by the way u can still get an owners manual for it and parts book at any MF dealer, i bought the parts book and owners manual last year for $32 bucks for both.

I have a 31 that my Grandfather bought new in 1959. It's been a good mower, but is getting some wear on it now, which means it needs a little more attention than it used to. Cutterbar parts are easy to get. Here's your two problem areas: the crankshaft inside the cast gearbox is no longer available. The one from the welded gearbox on the 41 is not interchangeable. Second, depending on what year of manufacture, you may have a taper bored main pulley with corresponding tapered and keyed drive shaft, or the later version with a splined shaft and pulley. The tapered shaft and pulley from the early version are no longer available. Last shaft I broke in 1995, we had a machine shop make a new one.
