I need a little advice, I have a IH 806 gas/w 3pt. and I have been pulling a J.D. 4-14's( 66HA) trailer plow. Well it pulls it like childs play as it is about 95 hp. I have a chance to get at a good price, either a JD. 5-14 H.S. or a 5-16 NU plow in decient shape or an IH. (I think it's a #720)plow, 5-16's for a little more money. Are the 5-16s too much to pull in hard ground? and are boards/shares hard to get for the "nu" (new universal) thanks in advance.

I would definitely go with the IH 720, for alittle more money you are getting one heck of a plow. Don't forget the 720 is a semi-mount job, which unlike a trailer plow aids in tractor traction-I don't think you'll have any trouble with 5-16's, my neighbor pulls 5-16's with a 766.

Maybe I should have mentioned that I have been pulling the 4-14's with my JD.70 diesel also pull it with my 730 D. ( So many colors soooo much fun!)to give an idea the types of soil that I'm dealing with so a more
accurate guess could be made, the JD's have no trouble pulling it. The hard clay spots are a gear down thing tho' for the Deer's the 70 pulls it in 3rd. whereas the 730 is geared lower so it pulls it in 4th. the T.A. on the 806 is kinda of a nice thing as you can down shift without clutching and shifting. But after a day on the 806 running at 2200rpm. then going back to the Deers running 900/950 rpm is an experance. so many tractors so little time/ground .
The Deers use 2 gal. per hr.of diesel where as the 806 G uses about 5 gal. per hr.all tho it is faster so the gal per acre is pretty close But diesel is less expensive than gas.It is nice to be able to enjoy the old ways thanks. George

There can be some pretty tough soils in S.E. Michigan. My grandmas place at Clinton was red clay. The guy who rented it pulled 4-16 with a 656. I think you could pull a 5-16 pretty much all the time with an 806 though. I would take the IH plow I think it is the better plow if it is a #720.

Our neighbor pulls a 6 16" IH 700 plow behing his 806 gas. It seems to work just fine in our heavy Iowa dirt.

Up here in the Minnesota clay, they figure 135 hp for a 5-18. I could pull a 4-18 with my 85 hp tractor in good conditions, but in tough years the 4-16 was almost a bit much. I would hate to have a 5-16 as my only plow on 95 hp, but if you keep both might work out, use the one conditions allow.
