Hello -

I'm thinking about purchasing an older tandem disc which seems in reasonable working order, but is covered with surface rust. How would one go about cleaning the rust off the larger structural members so that it could be repainted?

Any other general tips appreciated - thanks!

What make and model is it? Is it a disc Harrow or disc plow? I agree with the others, sand blast the old rust-it's quick and easy. Be sure to get it primered as soon as possible though.

I've restored my plow, and I know if I was doing a disk, I would sandblast. I purchased a small 50 lbs blaster at a tool supply store for 100.00. Need a compressor and disassemble any moving parts before blasting. Sand in a bearing journal will quickly ruin a bearing. But there isn't an easier way to derust old metal. Also reframe from blasting sheet metal as warping can occur. Sheet metal should only be sanded. There are other safety factors involved with blasting, follow the directions and use common sence.

The best way is probably sand blasting. It can remove a lot of rust in a hurry.
