I have built up a small business here in New England growing large pumpkins (100-175 lber's )
I should have a full size tractor , but can not get one at the time . Have any of you had any experiance , or thoughts on the tow behind tillers that Sears offer ? The garden I plant is about 4000 sq ft , with heavy soil and can be wet (high clay content )I would be using this for weed control in the summer after having the local real farmer come in with a full size machine to do the first and end of season tilling. Thank you for any help , or thought you can give on this .

What a coincedence! My wife and I bought a little 3 acre place in Tracy Ca. The sellers left a 18hp. Ranch King (MTD). It was in tuff shape, not running. 3 flats, froze starter, toasted ign.switch, bad belts etc.etc.(wonder why they left????) Im glad they did, it was the only thing I had to keep up the place. We used all our funds to get into the place. Anyway, along w/the tractor was a tiller attchment. 30in cut. I got the tractor going and all attch operational, but the soil here is like CONCRETE in the summer. So I had to be dilligant when we would get some rain. I'll tell you I worked that poor tiller and tractor and it NEVER disappointed me!!!! It would take a good weekend to till the place but I wouldnt have to worrie for months after. That continued for 5yrs. Now all she does is mow my big backyard. I purchased a 1957 TO35 MF w/tiller 5ft cut. So yes, you have my vote from experience. Just be patient..... ..Have Fun Bud!!!

For the size plot you describe, I would think the Sears tiller would be adequate. But I would like to know how you keep the vines back enough to be able to till between them. When we have pumpkins in the garden they vine everywhere and take over everything. Also do you already have a garden tractor big enough to run the tiller in your soil, probably 18 to 20 horsepower? If not, and your only use for the machine is cultivating you might be better off to buy a smaller older tractor that you could mount cultivators on rather than a tiller. You might also find other implements which would be helpful for the rest of your gardening needs too.

After alot of work ,trial and error have found a good system ,and right type of pumpkin . First I have a shallow well ,300ft of pvc pipe to a water pressure tank / solar heater and 800 ft (1600 ft total )of soarer hose laid out in two rows ,in from the edge 1.5 width of full size tractor tiller. Row is spaced 3 small walk behind tiller width and have 3-4 full size tiller width to leased operation . Water soluable feritalizer , good soil , and alot of sun , weed control by tiller and hand hoe , bug control by dust and this labor of love makes pumpkins little ones ....100 - 175 lbs. The gound is great if we do not have to wet a spring but I lose about a third if we have a wet spring . June and July very busy , after that it is just critter control woodchucks all gone from me and Wiley coyote now have for first time Deer trouble ...they to shall be given my attention soon also . I am toying with the idea of cuting old garden hose up in spacing lengths and connecting with 2 ft soarer hose for each plant , save me weeding the watered , and fertalized weeds so much between plants in a dry season would make a big differents

My dad and uncle , had a small farm operation (Grand parents to ) of about 100 acers but they sold out bit by bit so all that is left is 20 or so .....they sold off all the equipment to when I was young .It was felt that I should go off and do something other than farm work , so was pushed off to school . I now have come back home and have a family , but mom still runs the farm, it is leased out to another operation . My small plot is from their good will and to wet for them early spring. They do all the heary work that I need for cash per hour .It is good ground and in a good season , this little plot will produce over $6000. if I set up for retail sales. Of late I have been whole saling the lot for about Half, as always in life this profit had a way of going to other bills and not to the equipment I wanted . Mom has her money and can or could buy new full size JD's and Equipment all day long . She feels that farm and equipment are a waste of time and money. I am seeing the cost of having my work done going up , and what it costs me for my tilling and other work , lime spreading , fertalizer and all , I will have to give up or go back to retail sales .....The only good thing is that this small farm will not be sold and will be mine I hope some day ...so , I am looking to cut my costs with what I have , 210 JD lawn tractor that must do the yard first , so it can not be pushed heavy , mom has a fit if the lawn is not mown ....
