How much difference is there between a #3 and a #2
bolt? My brush cutter manual says to use a #2. The one that came with it sheared of when I just got into some heavy weeds. I replaced it with a #3 and when I got into some heavy brush my cutter was bouncing around and making terible racket and it never sheared. Should I go back to a #2 and just keep replacing it more often?

Around here they only sell #2, #5, & #8 grade bolts. Always wondered if there rest of the numbers were out there, but how did you find a grade 3, & what's it's specifications?

The manuals alway say to use _our_ bolts only, see the dealer... So, for my tractor blower, I went to the dealer & asked for a shear bolt. He hemmed & hawed a while, then went out back & sold me a bag of shear bolts. With 'Ford NewHolland' on the bag, while my blower is a 'SnowMachine'. Seems he didn't want to lose the sale, but bolts are bolts..... ??? I find the #5 shear a little easier & straighter than the softer bolts, which kinda just mash off. I would not use #8's however!

Not sure what your reference is to a #3 bolt.

Best bet in my opionion is to use 1/2 x 3" GRADE 2 bolt with nyloc nut (keeps bolt in place). Washers are optional.

The Grade 2 bolt will shear before tearing up your mower, driveline or heaven forbid tractor internals. Runs about ~.60 for whole setup. I tote about 6 of them on the tractor at all times.

Some folks just bend the bolt over reducing need to carry tools on the tractor, just use whatever is available to bend it - boot, root, rock etc.

There is a post above yours talking about a slip clutch that has "peaked" my interest. Check it out
