Going to use rear blade to plow this winter. Have tires with 25% tread and double ring chains. Have loader on front. Tires are filled. Is it more important to have really good tread on tires or just good chains or both? If chains, which are best? Live in Maine with lots of snow and gravel drive. Thanks.

I have a Ford 2N with loaded rear tires, tire chains, a back blade and an old Dearborn loader. I also have a fairly steep, long drive to plow and I can plow with the back blade going both up and down hill. I also had no trouble last winter driving it through drifts that were waist high. Good chains and the weight make all the difference in the world.

Weight on the drive wheels is the most important. You don't say what kind of tractor you have. My experience is that Ford/MF style tractors with front loaders have terrible weight distribution and the rear wheels. AC, Farmall, JD, Oliver and the like generally have better weight distribution. I replaced a Ford 600 with loader, loaded tires and 1100 lbs. of rear wheel weights with an AC D12 with loader, unloaded tires and only 300 lbs. of wheel weights, and had much better traction in snow.
