I've got some areas in my pastures that need some 'roughing up' and top seeding.

Traditionally they were drug with a chain-tooth harrow then broadcast seeded.

I've been thinking about modifying my 6' bush hog for 'thatching & scratching' by bolting some stout tines to the blades.. just like the thatching mower blades that you can buy for a typical lawnmower.

I have a ready supply of stout tines (one arm broken off) from my Kuhn rake.. so it's mostly labor to do it.

Has anyone out there tried this already ?
Am I wastin' my time ? (I know I'm only going to get a 5' pass at best..
probably answering my own question....)

How are you going to attach the tines so that they stay on? I wouldn't want one of those things flying off at me. There was an orchard near here that used to have a Bush Hog cutter with special blades that were bent down into hooks at the ends so that they could chop up the prunings and mulch them into the soil at the same time.

I was going to weld a fitting onto the blades about 3/4 the way out... pirated from the tedder rake. The tine then bolts on with a matching cap piece..

I think I've abandoned the idea... too much hassle and time for likely not much return..

Think I'll try to find an old chain tooth harrow to drag around...

Thanks though !
