I have a couple of fields that had a heap of milkweed come up in them this year. One was hay, the other mixed grain. I got everything cut before it got to seed but I was wondering if the plant keeps coming up from the old root year after year. Will the cutting weaken the root enough so it won't come up...That stuff bales wet and heavy!!!!!
Thanks in advance

Watch out, the greenies will be trying to take them for a butterfly refuge.

(Decline in Monarch Butterfly has been blamed on people eradicating milkweed)

Had some in the garden several years ago. It sends out a horizontal root 7-8" underground and a few feet away another plant springs up. We used to pick it during WWII (for life jackets?).

If the Milkweed is cut repeatedly, as it would be in a hay rotation (ie 2 or 3 times a year here in Eastern Ontario), in a couple of years you should eliminate 99% of it as it won't take the constant cuttung. Good Luck

That seems to work here in S. Dak. as well

Early in the spring, cut a bunch of the tender top leaves and little buds and cook them up. This won't help your "weed" problem, but they do taste good; somewhere between asparagus and spinach.
