I just got a new backhoe attachment for my John Deere 4300 compact utilty, the number 47. Works real nice. We dig trenches for drain pipe in our plumbing business. But if I ever was digging at hit an electrical line, or a gas line, what should I do? Bail out?

Hey Poppin, Im not sure who does you underground markings, but when I use to install masonary soundwalls (on pier foundations) I would contact USA. (underground serv.)They would come out and ID where live utilities existed. One catch though, they would only guarentee 3ft either side of their mark. Better than going in blind I guess. Although when your drilling up to 24" dia. and 10-12ft deep that can leave room for error. Needless to say we still hit all kinds of undgrd. Gas, water , ele. you name it. 1st. watch what kind of soil you bring up w/auger. Most contractors place sand or pea rock around pipes. 2nd, know you tractor, feel w/your hands thru the auger, sometimes you can get so good you w/be able to tell a large rock from a pipe. (hope it didint sound weired). 3rd. If by chance you hit something DONT PANIC! Check everyone around you (and put the cigarettes out). Believe me if you hit something hard you'll know! Hey hows that for a free safety meeting. GOOD LUCK!

If you called your local diggers hotline to mark everything out befor you dig, there should be no problems but if you do hit something, BAIL!!!! If it's a gas line, DON'T JUMP INTO THE TRUCK!!!! RUN!!!! Alert other folks in the area to clear out of the area. Get a safe distance away befor using a phone, even a cell phone befor you call the fire department. Don't want a spark to get the gas going.

I think what he was saying was, If electric line is hit, DON'T step off the tractor unless you have pulled the backhoe out of the hole and made sure it isn't touching anything. If you just bail, JUMP off, without touching the tractor. The tractor should be grounded already if you have the pads down, but they are new, and paint doesn't make a good ground. Niether does dry dirt. But you might...!
