I have seen the pitman turned upside down, the stop to the front instead of to the rear, done that same thing, told the guy to turn it over, worked correctly.

On the metal clamps on the pitman, where it snaps onto the "ball" of the sickle blade, one of them should have a finger sticking out, which is part of the casting of the clamp. It is broken off. It holds the blade up when the bar it lifted up You will need a new clamp half, as I dont know if I would trust a weld, if possible. Be careful when lifting up the bar to transport before you fix it, as the blade can cut off a finger as it falls down.

I'm not sure exactly how it is done on the 501, but both my MF 32 and AC G sickle bar mowers have a pin on one of the straps that connects the pitman to the knife. This pin contacts something on the inner shoe and stops the knife from falling out when in transport position. On the AC mower this pin is a separate piece that screws on - if it fell off it would have your symptoms (guess how I know).

Are the knife clips snug against the cutting bar? On my 501, it takes a couple of stout pulls on the bar to remove it. Re-installing also take some gentle tapping from a mallet. The knife clips should be in contact with the bar but not too much pressure (too much will cause excess heat/wear when in use).
