Info/suggestions on a big brush hog

I'm renting a small (4ft) brush hog this weekend to mow a hay field we can't get hayed this year.

Highway crews use very large mowers, but the 'standard' size seems to be 5ft.

8N's with a 5ft mower seem to be common.

If I look at getting something bigger on an older tractor, what should I look for ?

We ended up with a small Kubota (B21) and a 4ft woods mower. Did an okay job but looks more like I windrowed hay than mowed.

If I do it again in the spring Il'l take the 40hp
recommendation to heart and get something bigger.

And it took 12 hours. I'd like to cut the time in half too.

Last summer I purchased a Bush Hog 3008. It's an 8 foot pull type. I've been very happy with it. I use it to pasture clip with, and it does a great job. Excellent machine. I pull mine with a JD 5105 40hp tractor.

You should get a 40+ hp tractor with live or independent pto, wide front, power steering would be nice, and a 6' hog. If your mowing 5+ acres of foot and a half hay this combination will knock it out in half the time of a 8N-4'. Even if the 6' is a 1/3 bigger than the 4' the bigger tractor will move over the ground faster than the small and may accutualy mow in less than half the time. This tractor would handle your baling needs if you decide to do that later.
