iam looking at a new holland compact 65 baler. it is good shape and the man said that he has had new knotters and tiers put on the baler about 3 years ago. i was wondering if these r good balers or not. does anyone have any experience or info on this baler. i can get it at $800 is this too much or not. any information would be helpful. thanks

I have one here in drydock that I used for several years. The chamber is 12" X 16" as opposed to 14"X18". Good and dependable. They don't have much capacity though and you can't push them. Their only fault is the feeder carriage set up. It is run by a chain that is shear-protected by a stove bolt as per the manual. if you get into heavy stuff this will give you trouble as it will shear. Don't use a nail either, the chain will shear. Make sure you have the wedges in the chamber and look at the hay dogs in the upper side of the chamber as well. They have 2 fingers on them. Dealers don't carry these any more. The heaviest bale you'll get with this is 35 or 40 lbs so if you are selling, the ladies will love you, the Florida dealers will not. 800 is more than I'd pay but if you can get a few good years out of it, it doesn't take too many breakdowns to add up to the difference.Any questions feel free to ask. Hope this helps.

I never had a 65 but the NH balers are good, and you can still get plenty of needed parts from NH.

$800 does'nt sound too bad at all as long as it works good and the metal is good. I priced a new NH small square this year and it was $14,700

Compact? What was the deal on them again, different from regular?

Also, I thought older than a 68 has the wad board, which works, but is not as good as the teeth moving the hay over.

Around here, $800 would be a lot, $500 or less for a machine that old (Actually it would need to be mint for $500, closer to $150). But, where you live that size machine may be popular and then if it's in good working condition you have to go with market conditions. :)

I'm not sure what year they came up with tines vs wad boards but the 65 should have tines. It was the model that followed the 67 Hayliners. I don't how they come up with the series numbers either.

Here's the run of series according to data from NH books. I know the decals called it a Compact but NH calls it a standard 2 tie square baler and does'nt list it as a compact model.

65 NH SQUARE BALER (08/01/1960-02/05/1965) 67 NH HAYLINER BALER (08/01/1958-07/31/1961) 68 NH TWIN TIE SQUARE (06/01/1956-06/30/1958)
66 NH SQUARE BALER (06/01/1952-06/30/1955)

Thanks, I obviously was in left field, thinking the model numbers would run in order.... ;)

You're welcome and thank you for the question. I had'nt ever looked the series up but I knew they were out of sync someways. Now we know.

Our local NH dealer said thet if the 65 was in good condition like he mentioned here it would bring around $1750-$2000 at the dealer and on private sales it would go $1500 or so.

thanks guys for all the info. buy the way on the price i went my NH holland dealer and he said that $800 is a steal. the last 65 that he sold he sold it for $1800 and that was last month. he further added that he carries all the parts the teeth, dogs, springs etc.

thanks for all the info.

there should be "steals" on small square balers. not many commercial farmers use small square balers anymore, labor, and in-barn storage and handling is just too expensive. big rounds, big squares have replaced them. thousands of older small square balers abound. just look around. of course NH Dealers have too make a profit. but a direct purchase from a retired farmer is the way to find a deal i think.
