I have an old Mccormick-Deering tool that I would like some info. on.
It has several gears that turn a small conical shaped grinding stone that moves up and down about 4 inches as the stone turns. The front has a clamp that holds some type of blade that is being sharpened. The clamp is under spring tension that can be moved up against the grinding stone. There is a rod about 3/8 diameter and 7 inches long in the top of the tool that does not appear to have any purpose. It has a clamp on the bottom to attach it to a board.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone that might know what this is used for.
Thanks. Derrell Benton

Derrel, you have an interesting tool. They were made in the late 1800's right up to the 1950's. These were used to sharpen sickle knives and as has been mentioned the clamps were to hold the sickle knife in place as each section was buzzed by the up and down motion of the grindstone. the other large clamp was designed to clamp the sharpener to the wheel of the sickle mower. The farmer could take the device to the field with him and sharpen the sickes as he saw fit. I have two, one cost me $35 and the other at an auction for $17. A restoreer asked $ 300 for one complete and refinished...it was beautiful. I need a stone for mine and can't find one. There were two different runs. One said McCormick Deering ,the other just said Deering...a nice piece of nostalgia....Mike in Exeter Ontario

You have a sickle grinder. Was used to sharpen the knives of cutter bar mowers. Last made about 1955.
