I'm thinking of purchasing a 1997 John Deere model 566 round baler. I would like to hear from people that have been running them. I need to know about the ease of operation, maint.,and reliability. I am interested in knowing if any one has baled Coastal Bermuder in the deep south with one,and need to know what they think of the bales the baler has rolled, like if they are tight and uniform with this southern grass. I would also like to know what horsepower tractor will handle this baler. Thanks for your time; Barney-South Ga.

A neighbor round bales our hay with a 566 he bought new in '98 and to my knowage he hasn't had any problems with it and every bale is solid. On flat ground and light hay your 3020 might handle it but the 4430 would do alot better, those balers are heavier than they look and when you add 1,800lb bale they can push a tractor around. The net wrap is great unless the bale gets wet and then freezes the net wrap on, then it can be hard to get off but you shouldn't have that problem. I usually just unwrap it from the bale when I feed them, it's easier than cutting it and I usually forget a knife. The net preserves the bales alot more than you would think.

Barney we use a 468 which is jds new baler with net wrap. it makes tight uniform bales which is not really that hard to do with the moniter. but we are also doing it in alfalfa too. we pull i t with a 4240 jd which is around a 110hp. it makes a 4x6 bale where the 566 would make a 5x6 bale. if you get the netwrap you wont be sorry for the extra cost it makes the bales look better and are easier to sell. the 468 has one advantage over the older 566 which is it has the over the edge netwrap to it instead of the regular type. i think that you would love this baler....it will take some time gettinr used to(unless you havew had pre-experience with a roundbaler). i have alsop heard that if you can sq.bale you cant make a pretty round bale but if you can make a nice round bale oyu cant with a sq.baler. sorry to waste your time and hope this helps.

Thanks John! I was wandering if my 3020 would handle this baler? I could always use the 4430 if it don't. Once again, I thank you for your time, and the very usefull info! Barney-South Ga.

is your 3020 a later model?(69-72) or older 64-68? mine is a 64 model with powershift and COULD run it but i wouldnt recomend it to many times. it might handel it better if it was diesel instead of gas too mines agas model. but like i said we use the 4240 on it cuz of the cab and the hp. they are really good balers and you should be re3ally happy with!!! good luck
