King Kutter rotary cutter questions

Hello everyone

Today I bought a King Kutter 6' rotary cutter, and it has left me with a few questions. The manual was rudimentary at best, but I did get most of the machine put together properly (at least I hope I did).

Towards the end of assembly, I ended up a few nuts and bolts short, one long (7 1/2") bolt, and one extra, big, U shaped black bracket which was not shown at all in the manual. It is shown in the pdf file on the King Kutter website, and referenced as a top link swivel, but the picture is grainy and hard to make out. The long bolt is nowhere to be found in their literature.

Also, the manual emphatically states to not fill the gearbox with oil beyond the cast iron plug, or ruptured seals will result. However, the diagram shows TWO cast iron plugs at two different levels, with no indication of which one is the critical one.

If anyone has advice, preferably from experience, I would appreciate hearing (or reading) it. Thanks.

Bill

Thanks everyone for the info and advice. I've gotten it all put together correctly, except for a missing bolt for the top link swivel. I imagine I'll be picking that up at the hardware store today, and then I can go out and reduce the jungle in the field.

Bill

Try contacting their customer service at [email protected]. I just bought a fertilizer spreader that was missing the manuals, and they're sending them right out to me. That tells me that they support their customers.

Hi Bill,
I just recently purchased a used 5' king kutter mower. I had to make my own top link swivel for mine and like was allready said the top plug is for filling the gearbox and the lower is the gearbox level to stop filling at. We bought a new Rhino mower in 86 and was told to just fill it with gun grease to prevent oil leakage? We did it and it is still running strong today, a neighbor down the road owns it now(sold him mower and a tractor, bought the tractor back but didn't get the mower back, thus the new/used king kutter) but its running just fine. I like the way the king kutter is made and it allows material to exit the machine easier, safety chains might be a good thing to make for them if you are in a crowded area. Hope the info helps.

Heres a different brand with a good picture breakdown. Diagrams at the bottom of page. Yours may vary.

If you bought a used unit, you may not have the 'u' shaped toplink bracket. That is a fairly recent addition to the cutter. I did not have one on mine when I bought it new several years ago. The upper plug is the fill plug. You take both plugs out and fill the unit until the oil starts to come out the lower plug hole..Then you are serviced to the correct level..ingenious, eh?
One thing I can say is that the KK bush hog(rotary cutter) can take a beating..The 'I' beam sides on mine show it...Hate to think what would have come thru the sides if just bent over sheetmetal like many units have. Good luck with yours,
Tom-Pa
P.S. Keep the bolts tight on the unit.
