I am missing the through bolt/pin on my brush hog that connects the drive shaft to the gear box on my 5' brush hog. Of course I don't know what brand or model of hog I got. I know I don't want one thats too hard or I'll break something mechanical..too soft and I'll be replacing it all of the time. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Tsc & other places sell the right pin. It is designed to shear, which protects the gear train. I used to shear them all the time, but after I realized that a bush hog is just a very stout mower, I picked it up a couple of inches. Mowing is more pleasant and a lot quieter!!!

Well, there are surely differences of opinion on THIS subject and here's my "take" on it. My brush hog is fairly new and the owner's manual is very specific about the shear pin/bolt being grade 2. The dealer also made a point of mentioning it and said that a higher grade would stress the gear box and pto drive. Yes, I've sheared 2 or 3 bolts but I'd rather deal with the hassle of replacing bolts than a gearbox or pto on the tractor. If you're shearing too many bolts, then you're doing something else wrong, like not watching the terrain, etc. Like the other guys said, "just my two cents' worth."

YOU NEED TO USE AT LEAST A GRADE 5 BOLT. THE MORE YOU SHEER THE BOLT, THE MORE THE HOLE WILL WOLLER OUT. IT DOESN'T TAKE LONG TO GET TO THE POINT WHERE THE BOLT WILL NOT STAY AT ALL. THE MORE IT BREAKS AND THE MORE THE UNIVERSAL ROTATES ON THE GEAR BOX SHAFT, THE SLOPPIER IT FITS AND YOU WIND UP REPLACING ALL OF IT. GOOD LUCK.

Stick with the grade 2 or 3. buy half a dozen and keep them handy. It is better to replace the shear pin/bolt than mower parts and shafts or possibly your pto.

On my 6 foot generic rotary cutter I use a grade 5 bolt (1/2 inch I think). Grade 2 sheared a lot during 'normal' use, the grade 5 has sheared in a couple of instances when it should have, and I suspect grade 8 would shear right after the gear box fell apart. Local hardware stores in this area have all 3 hardness grades.

Just my $.02 worth,
Bob

are you talking shear pin?? if this brakes the blade stops spinning?? the pto will still turn. just as on haybalers and choppers? use any bolt thats fits hole and use a strong one. we always broke them on IH mower and have since used ones from friend who works on aircraft engines and havent broke in years. if you think it will break you shoudnlt be mowing it thats what i say.
