I've been thinking about getting a gear drive tiller for our small vegetable farm. I've got a Farmall Super C. Most tillers I've seen come in 4, 5, & 6 foot widths. The 4 footers are usually off-set to one side to cover one set of wheel tracks. The recommended horse power for the 5 footers usually say it should be run from 25 - 35 hp. My SC has 24 hp. Now the questions... is there enough cushion in the recommendations so that I could handle a 5 footer? Anyone have experience with the 4 ft. off-sets? Do they work OK?

Unless you have the creeper gear in the Super C, your first gear probably would not be slow enough for effective tilling. Also, the Super C does not have live PTO so you can't stop the ground travel and have the tiller keep going.

I can't help you on the horsepower question.

I was planning on using an over-run clutch on the PTO to deal with the ground travel issue. I hadn't thought about the speed issue in first gear. I don't have a creeper gear. Has anybody out there tried a tiller in first gear?

I've been around super c's. Their first gear isn't low enough I think you'd be disappointed.
With a tiller you need to creep, but have full rpm's. The only way it would work if is the ground was already plowed.

SAO: The ground is in vegetables this year. I plan to plow and disc, and if feasible, then use a tiller to prepare 4 ft. beds for planting. Based on that, is it still too much to expect the C to be able till effectively in first gear?

I think it would work. I didn't realize you were going to work the soil before hand.

OK. I'm going to give it a go. I appreciate your willingness to discuss this with me.
