Can anyone tell me anything about an IH Model 50
wire tie baler. Such as, what years were they
made, what engine they used and why they were not
PTO driven. Were these things a decent baler?

Don, Is this the old baler with a spoked flywheel on the side. Dad and one of his neighbors both had a 50T. Another neighbor had the wire tie and I think it was a 50AW. Dad's had the continental flat head engine, the other 50T had a cub engine and the other neighbor had a bigger engine, possably an H engine. I thought some of the IH guys would respond. This is not official, just machines dad and his neighbors had when I was growing up in the 50's and 60's. The 50 was produced after the war into the 50's. This is not a little compact, high speed baler but if it is not worn out it bill bale and tie lots of hay in a days time. Lots of folks badmouth the IH balers but i've seen them go on and on without a miss. Dad's had been setting a long time when he bought it so it took a while as it was his first baler to learn it and get it limbered up and tieing. He gave me some twine, a knife, and the manuel and told me to learn to tie the "baler knot" found there for splicing the twine when reloading the twine box.. I spent that summer on the twine box of the old 50T catching missed ties while dad honed his baler mechanical skills. He would have to stop and let his "knotter" catch up if it missed two in a row. The baler and I both got good at tying at about the same time. Graduated up to the tractor seat so dad could start hauling. Big day. As to engine versis pto drive, many farmers like my dairy farmer dad had small tractors like His vac that had only 20 horse power. Lots of people today mow their yards with more HP than he had to farm and do custom baling with. Other neighbor pulled his 50T with an A farmall. Horse power and live PTO's are relatively new to some of us oldies.
