I've been looking for an older baler for haying my 10 acres. I have a 52 ford 8N tractor. I came across a NH 271 baler for sale for $300 that I'm going to look at tonight. Problem is I don't know squat about balers except what I've read here and other various places. What kind of reputation does the NH 271 have. What should I be looking for when I go look at it? Are parts and an owners manual still available for this model? Does anyone know when it was made? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

DD: The Model 271 Hayliner was a popular baler produced in the 60's and maybe up into the early 70's. Knotter parts are very similar for not only many New Holland balers but across the board. The 271 is getting old enough that many parts will be NLS (No Longer Serviced) at your NH parts counter but they still are somewhat available. The 271 came with PTO drive, or with the THD 2 cylinder Wisconsin engine. Also available was the optional 4 cylinder VH4D Wisconsin engine. If your baler has a good VH4D engine 300 bucks was a good deal. The 271 was available in twine or wire tie. Most likely yours is a twine tie, you would probably be better off with a twine tie for small acreages and intermittent baling. You'll need to check plunger bearings, condition of pick-up assembly, chains, sprockets, and of course the knotter and needles. Needles for the 271 will set you back over 200 bucks alone. E-mail me direct if you have detailed questions and I'll help if I can. (I own and still operate 3 NH 271 Hayliners.)
