I bought a used brush hog which has a grease sert instead of a plug in the gearbox fill hole. I'm assuming the bottom seal is bad and it is filled with grease because normal gear oil leaks out. I've read about this on this board and some guys say grease works fine. My question is, do you just pump it completely full of grease? Ive heard that overfilling with gear oil is worse than running low (not sure why). Does the same theory not apply when using grease in the gearbox?

I have my brush hog filled with grease too. Yes, the bottom seal is shot. Because grease stays mostly as a solid, you can pump the gear box full, and give it a few pumps each day before useing it. Just make sure the breather is still working so the gear box doesn't build up pressure. The excess grease will be pushed out through the bad bottom seal. Robert
