Just got a No.5 sickle and they have removed the lift ram. I was told to just get one at Central Tractor ,a cheap one, because it doesn't need to be a large one. But, does it need to be a certain size piston or certain length, retracted, to fit in the mountings right??

Jim, I use a 2X8 on my #5 and it works very well. One thing that you should watch though and that is that the cylinder does not pick the sickel bar up to high, just high enough to clear the mowed hay. If it pickes it up to high it will cause the pitman to have to push the sickel at an up angle. This is hard on the pitman. Good luck

I have a JD #37 and I use a 3x8 that I bought at CT. You may get by with a 2x8 as well. I bought the larger bore because I use it on a disk too. THose are very standard sizes and fit many applications and should fit your mower, but be careful the first time you try it.

there is a bolt threaded all the way up that the arm attached to the end of the ram works against to lift the mower. You can adjust the bolt to get enough lift
