Is there an implement or attachment that will pick up or rake leaves? Find myself with a bum shoulder which will prevent the usual hand raking this fall. Thanks for any suggestions.Frank.

I use a walk-behind blower (Little Wonder) that works quite well. These come in various sizes starting at about $400. For quite a bit more money you can get a three-point mounted, PTO driven blower. Goossen is one brand, see link below.

I hate raking and picking up leaves so what I do is run my riding mower in a circular pattern blowing the leaves toward the inside of the circle. By doing this I am running over the same leaves over and over breaking them into tiny pieces. This stuff will then decompose quickly adding organic matter into the soil. I never even bother picking up the rake any more except for the wifes flower beds. This works best if leaves are dry.

Snapper offers a screen and plate that attaches underneath their walk-behind self-propelled mower that vacuums and shreds leaves. I have been using this for many years. Emptying the bag may not help your shoulder, but it sure beats raking!

Depends on your financial picture. Less than $300- mow the leaves and use a 42 inch agrifab sweeper (added benefit: if you have pine trees it will pick up pine straw great and then be pulled to shrubs and flower beds were you can use it for decorative mulch). These sweepers will hold alot of leaves if you run the mower over them and chew them up first. They also work better the faster you pull them so the leaves can be removed several times instead of one big removal. I love mine

There are mini siderakes (seem to be $400 tho!) that are like the real wheel rakes. But, that only windrows the leaves, don't know how you'd pick them up.

I have one, they're called "Estate Rakes." Do a great job, until you get too deep! But yeah, somewhwer along the line, you gotta get off the seat, and load the things into a trailer. I use a pair of leaf rakes, kinda chopstick style. Seems I got mine for less than $300. They'll do a good job with grass and thatch too.

I just use a riding lawnmower with rear grass bags, you can line them with trash bags if you want then just tie them closed and dump them in the trash or scatter the leaves on your garden and plow them in as organic fertilizer

This came up on another board a while back. Basically, ya got two choices:

Sweeper - cheap, but not terribly effective, gotta dump dang near every round.

Vac/Trailer - expensive, does great job, chops leaves as it vacs and compacts nicely.

One of the nicer vac/trailers has a separate engine for the vac blower, the hose has an adapter that hooks to the discharge chute on the mower deck of an ordinary lawn tractor, a caster type trailer that hitches rigidly to the back so it's maneuverable, and a covered box that'll hold about a yard of material.

My father-in-law has the nicer vac/trailer with the separate engine. He tows it behind a 42" Craftsman and loves it. He maintains about 5 acres full of trees with it. Now if I just talk him into letting me borrow it every once in a while (I do the mow the leaves into the center until their mush).

Is it possible to buy just the vac without a trailer? I would like to make up my own.

I got this half-baked notion about using the second stage fan off a two-stage snowblower. Haven't found the snowblower yet, I keep checking the yard sales and bulk junk pickup days.

I've got a dandy motor to run it with and I figure I can do a little tin-work to close up the fan box and attach a hose. Only question is whether it will create enough suction.

Check with local small motor shops, or a garden tractor bone-yard, see if you can get the blower housing you need and perhaps other parts. 5hp tiller motors are available from farm stores for under $200 - should do fine for what you need, if you don't already have power.
