Speaking of the #46, I just saw one at an auction in very-good to excellent condition sell for $425.

Hi,
Are you considering buying one?
If so, I'd recommend looking for a NH brand.
The IH 45 and 46 had a tendency to be hard on the pto of tractors. Go New Holland if you haven't purchased yet.

I have a model 46 baler I like a lot. I'm not sure of production dates but mine was made in the early 1960's. I also know there was some modifications made later in production to accomidate a bale thrower. For you guys with balers missing bales, one of the areas to look at are the springs on the 4 hay retainers. I had tying problems with mine for a couple of years and found out I was missing 3 of the 4 springs. Once I replaced them the bales became much better shaped and the tying problems stopped.

The 46 is a good baler. I have one as well as a 37. Jen-Sales has books on the baler and also a book on the knotter systems on IH balers. Both are good books. The 46 has maple blocks on the plunger instead of roller bearing like the 37. These blocks may need to be replaced. Also check the knotters for wear. Check the duckbills for grooves worn through the crome and check to see if the twine knives are sharp. It does not cost much to go to the inserted twine knives (new style) but the duckbills are about $135 each to replace. You should run sisal twine in the baler since plastic twine hadn't been invented in 1957. I think the baler was produced from 57 to 63.

Tom

I have a 46, not sure of productions years, but mine is around 1960. It works ok, could be better misses to much for me. I'm still trying to get the number of misses down. Use sisal in it, works better than plastic. I would have to say overall it's a good baler. I do have a manual if you need some more information. Happy Farming

Tom: I have an IH 47 baler. I need a Manual. Would you be able to copy your IH 46 manual and send it for cost of reproduction and postage?

I've got a 36 but I can not remember when it was made. Can't find my manual, Do you have the wire tie or the twine tie. Ours is twine and it has been a real good baler. I don't think it really compares to a new holland but for our small operation it does what we need it to. Be sure you use the twine tightener inside the twine box though because this will make it only miss 2 every 100 not 10 every 100. It took me a long time to figure it out because it says nothing about it in the manual. Good luck.

If you are missing 2 out of every 100 bales, you still have a problem. Check to see if your twine knives are sharp. You might want to upgrade to the new knives with the razor blade inserts. You might also want to check the adjustment on the knives. Also, make sure that the duckbill does not have a grove worn into it. Jen-Sales has an international book on the notters on all of the twine tie balers. That will help you get rid of those nagging misses. My 37 has not missed a bale in 2 years since I replaced the twine knives.
