You should not have any problems as long as you are set up correctly.

WOW! It's fairly obvious that a lot of people have little or no plowing experience. When I was growing up on the farm we routinely pulled 4-16s with a McCormick WD-9 or JD R at 4 to 4 1/2 MPH.
Those tractors each had about 43-45 HP. If a 120 HP tractor won't handle a 5-18 at 4 to 5 MPH then there is something dreadfully wrong with that tractor. The only way you could possibly not pull that plow is if you set it to plow so deep that it would look like you were bulldozing a road instead of plowing. Also plowing at 2.5 MPH is so slow that (unless you were in sod) the plow again wouldn't be doing a good job.

Ron, around 'here' your size plow on that size tractor would be called a land-mark - as it would never move! 'Here' you need 20 hp per bottom, 25-30 for an 18-20" bottom. Perhaps 'there' where you are the soils are much different.

Dad plowed with an Oliver 88 & a 3-16 plow. In hard packed alfalfa ground a second tractor was needed with a tire & chains between, and 1st or second gear. On the other hand, in light soils, he did plow in 5th gear a time or two because the draft was so light. Mostly, it was matched up about right.

The same thing will happen for this guy. Most of the time in average soils he will be about right with the 5-18s. If he has tight heavy yellow clay soils like 'here' it would be a real good workout tho for the tractor, and some years will be very slow plowing. On the other hand, if he lives next to you, it will be a nice easy pull for an older tractor that probably has a little blow-by....

I have been farming for 50 years and he is going to talk about no experience he doesn't even know where i live. Its not like some of those questions when is my hay dry? how do i rake? How to i bale. This is a question from a experienced farmer

Bryan don't let it rattle you.

At least he did'nt insist you get a Kubota or Kiote a front loader and 4 wheel drive.

They may have plenty of experience, it's just that different soils require different hp.

In the soils around here a 4840JD won't pull a 4 bottom unless you chisel the fields 1st.

On the other farm 15 miles up the road I could pull a 3 pan disc turning plow down to the hub with a B Farmall.

What gear are you wanting to pull that plow in?

Or perhaps, the question should be how fast. Either way. Horsepower calculations use time, load, and distance. You lift 33,000# one foot in one minute, and you have one hp.

If you want to pull a load with a draft of say 10,000#, and you pull it at 2 mph, it will require a lot less hp than if you pull at 4mph.

There were a LOT of older tractors, made 40 years ago, which made considerably less hp than 120, yet were rated to pull 5, 6, even 8 bottoms on less hp, but typically pulled that plow in a low gear...say at 2.5 mph. I think that the more modern approach is to plow a teensy bit faster than that, say at 5mph? I use a JDf145-4x14 behind a 4020 when I plow. The 4020, at 95hp has considerably more than the 59hp the 3010 that was originally supposed to pull a plow that size had. However, I pull the thing in 4th gear or even 5th, not 1st or 2nd!

We pull a 5 bottom 16" behind our 1070 Case (105 hp). Works fine as long as the weights are on and the tires have tread!

I would suggest to put 4-18's behind the Case. You will be much happier.
