This might be a wild shot in the dark, as I've noticed that there does not seem to be much participation from fellow Northeasterners. Would like some feed back from some of you guys who've plowed a few fields.
I have an IH 504, gas, and would like to know if it has enough muscle to pull a 10' transport disk. Tractor is in good solid shape.
Second question, and this might be the real shot in the dark, what is a 10' transport worth? I'm in South Central PA.

I am going to weigh in here with more questions. What kind of soil do you have. Sandy loam pulls a heck of alot easier than red clay so factor that in your decision. Also I have found that a disc harrow pulled a right good pace beats ones pulled slowly. You may be able to pull it in 1st gear but 3rd would actually make it cut better. Another thing to look at is If you can pull an 8' disc twice as fast as a 10' don't you cover more ground with the 8' in the same amount of time? I think you want a disc you can comfortably pull in the 3-5 mph range in the soil types you own.

Those are good points! IN order to get the mixing/stirring action a disk is supposed to create you must be moving at more than a crawl. One drawback to too small a disk though is more compaction as you have more whell tracks across the field. My suggestion is to try it out in your soil and see what you can do.

I think your 504 should be able to pull a 10 foot disk. I pull a 14 foot IH disk with my John Deere 830 and most times it would probably handle a 16 foot disk.

Me and my buddy have a 12ft #37 International Disk. This disk is certainly not a heavy weight disk, but we now regularly pull it with a 560, that we just bought last spring, the 560 has no trouble with it. But before we bought the 560 our biggest tractor was a Super M-TA which puts out around 55 horses, we would load up three sets of wheel weights on it and also put two sets of little 50 pounders on the front wheels. The M-TA would have no trouble with it on the flat in second gear. One of our fields has a good sized knoll at the end of it. It will pull the M-TA down but buy this time your over the knoll and away you go. I definitely don't think a 504 would have a problem with a 10footer unless your one of the guys here in PA whos fields craw up the sides of the mountains and then I would say you might have a problemo.
Good Luck!!!!!

We have a 504 gas, and our 8ft International disc will stall it in heavy ground. The disc is a finishing disc. But you may have a different set-up than us, so it may work out better. We have a 10ft JD disc, and it will make our 4320 bark some times.

I pull a 12' in plowed ground with my 560G, and an 8' in unplowed. My 'H' will pull the 8 footer in plowed ground. We use a 16 footer on the Case 100 (105 hp). I would think the 504 would do it unless the disk is real heavy and digging really deep.

Depends on how heavy the disk is. I have a 10' Taylor-Way that will slow down my 90HP 4020 if you let it dig in too much in soft ground. This disk is very heavy and is designed for chopping heavy trash. I also have a John Deere KBA 10' transport disk that my 48HP MF65 gas can pull in plowed ground. The trick with the KBA is getting it level fore and aft as well as laterally. Then it pulls pretty easy. However, the KBA probably only weighs a third (maybe less) of what that Taylor-Way does.

I have a JD 10' RWA (real-light-duty finishing disk), I used it this spring with a JD 2020 diesel(about 50 hp) no problem at all. I used to pull it with my Case 930 which was overkill. Problem with the RWA is that the gangs aren't adjustable. I am in the process of restoring the disk now.

get a hold of lancaster farming for price ideas. shouldnt be hard to find disks that size in the area.

Wayne, Did a few myself with a 504D, our disk are eight feet and that is plenty for them to handle. Price depends on the shape of them. and I live in NE. Pa. in susqu.cty. Good luck Craig

It will probably do it ,if the disc is a light finishing disc. The 504 won't run away with it, though. I'm from eastern NY, if that makes a difference.
