I have begun to look around for an older(less expensive) mower to mow the roadway edge with and need one that will operate at about 30 to 45 degrees. I understand that I will probably have to fabricate (mechanical or hydraulic) to hold it in that position with. I understand that there was an older pitman arm that would do this but the dealer who gave me the info didn't know . thanks muchly

I've been using an MF model 41 for years to mow nearly anything, anywhere. I even set the sickle up at 90 degrees and trim the hedge rows. Mowed my yard today with it, as a matter of fact. Uses very little tractor fuel and cuts under, around and over. Just keep the break-away more loose than you'd like and it will do the work you need. Should be able to pick one up for $500 to $750 in good shape, I would guess.

Most road ditches are fairly gradual and the mower won't have that much angle relative to the tractor?

However, for that angle, just spend a bit more for the belt drive wobble box, a pitman that works long & reliably at those angles is rare & probably just as expensive...

If you get a Massey sickle mower, be prepared to repair it, I have a model 31,, and my neighbor does as well, we swap stories of what we have had to replace and repair,,,, but for small sections, they work OK,, just mowing 30 acres, takes a lot out of it.., if I could afford it,, I would get a disc mower.

Get a Massey sickel and forget the pitman arm. It would probably work better on that much of a angle. (belt drive to the shaker box)
