Sorry to ask so many questions. Just starting to think about doing some small scale haying.

Are repairs on older JD balers fairly straightforword (with a manual of course)? What are trouble spots to look for? I will find out the model pretty soon.

Also, has anyone heard of a Stohl wheel rake? What are their reliability and performance ratings in your experiences?

Thanks again, Kenneth S.

Most balers are pretty straighforeward and in general about the same construction. I used to work for a JD dealership and they make a good baler. I like the NH better but a preference only. As the other reply said get an operator's manual from the dealer or through the 800 number. Check things over in the winter or pre season and replace, tighten adjust what needs to be worked on and it will be more likely to give you god service in the field. Can't over stress the value of the manual, I also like to have a parts book to show how things should be.

Other than changing shear pins on occassion a JD baler should never need repair! Just kidding. I have a 214T JD and bale 3000+ bales a year with no problem. I had to replace a gear on the pickup head this year but only because I jambed it in the ground baling ditch hay. I just stole one off of my 14T I have for parts. The most complicated part will be the knotters but they seldom need attention other than greasing the zircs. Go to JD and get an original manual for the best luck. As far as wheel rakes go I anm biased against them. I would look for a "rolling basket" type rake like a JD or a New Holland 55,56,or 57. Happy Haying!
