Hi, I have a New Holland 272 square baler, and was wondering if my little Massey 35 Diesel will take it. I expect to put up 8,000 or so bales. The baler is really big and really heavy. The terrain is not flat, I would say the slope is 20% or so. What do you guys think?

I use a Ferguson FE-35 with my NH 269 baler and a basket behind and it has lots of power for that even on hills. If your windrows are big enough you can stay in the lower gears and leave yourself lots of spare torque for the PTO. Good luck

Is this a PTO or engine baler? The 272 shouldn't be that heavy in PTO model. I would suggest putting a drawbar on the tractor. Balers slam the hitch a lot as the work and put a lot of wear on the 3 point. If it is pto you also have to consider the length from the end of the pto shaft on the tractor to the hitch point. Standard is 14 inches to center of hitch pin. The 3 point drawbar is uisually more than than and may cause problems on turns. Good luck with the baler

Does the tractor have good brakes. I think that it would handle it pretty well because my little Ford 600 with only 31 horsepower handles a interational 37 baler on slopey land but it has to be up to full strength and the brakers have to be right. Make sure these two things are right and you should have no problem.

James, thanks for the help. The tractor has pretty good brakes. Do I need a drawbar mounted on the tractor, or can I just use the drawbar mounted on the three point hitch?

Not so familiar with that color tractor, but what keeps the 3-point hitch _down_? When the baler is full of bales, it will want to lift the hitch up, and there goes your pto shafts, as well as the tractor pto. Also a 3-point hitch is often too far back, this will mess up your pto linkage on turns, if it reaches at all. 3-points have a little sway in them, you want a solid connection.

8000 bales on hilly ground is a lot, you want this right or you will wear something out in a hurry. You are not going to pull a hayrack too, are you? I think that would certainly be too much weight for your tractor to control. It's not so much a power issue, it's being able to stop the whole mess.
