Would I be correct is assuming any well-used conditioner for under $3,000 isn't gonna do much for conditioning and I might as well just sickle mow. Do the rolls wear to a point where they are no longer effectively conditioning the crop and just spitting it out the back? If this is the case, many of these used machines are junk in need of an expensive rebuild and I might as well buy a good nearly new or new conditioner, or just stick with a sickle mower and tedder.

I bought a used Gehl 2170 last year for $1800. I have put several teeth into the cutter bar and replaced one belt. Put in 7000 bales last year and 5000 so far this year. It works great. Haybines in central NY seem to sell for $1500 to 2500 for good decent machines.

Brian,
I found the same to be true here in Wisconsin. It seems you really need to be cautious if you get too much below that $1500 price tag. There's a lot of worn out machines out there.

Well I went the extra mile. I went about 75 miles away from where I live and bought a J.D. 1209 Mow/Cond. I bought it with the guarantee from the Dealer that it was field ready. I paid 4700.00 for it but well worth the money I used it this year and I was fantastic. I bought an extra cutting bar and some spare teeth.( about 100.00 more) but well worth having them incase. My rollers can be adjusted easily for different crops as it is Im cutting brome hay and the conditioners are set for alf. but i havent cut alf yet and its been hot enough here that drying hasnt been a problem to make it worth my time to adjust them for brome. My cents worth....

I purchased a 990 IH 7' cut last spring for a $1000. It needed 2 new belts and the knife sharpened. Its not the machine the 472&488 NH"s I have used are, but sure beats my very good working 450 mowing machine. Bargins are out there it just takes a little time. The other posts are correct about watching the rollers and wobble boxes. I would also take the top cover off of the gearbox to have a look. Good NH machines go for the 2-3000 $ range around here. Good luck. Roy

Agman,

Don't worry about the rollers being a little worn down. A haybine will still cut drying time over a sickle mower. The hay still gets "fluffed up" somewhat by the action of going through the rollers. A haybine is still miles ahead of a sickle bar mower. Like the others said make sure the wobble box is good. You can't cut without it and they are expensive to replace.
My two cents worth.

I bought a NH 478 haybine early this spring. I paid $2500, and it's in good shape only a few wrinkles on the left side. Like Pual said look at the rollers and the wobbel box, those are the big dollar items. So good luck and keep looking they are out there.

You need to look at the rollers. If they look good, should work fine. If they are worn down or blistered off the metal then it's probably not worth fooling with.
