I'm thinking of a five or six foot mower, looking for opinions of Bush Hog (brand), Woods and Land Pride. Also side or rear discharge? Clippings will stay where they lay.

i really don't have a comment, just a problem. I recently purchased an older finish mower. the only thing I know about the brand of it is "Superior Equipment , Stockton, Mo." It does have a decal on it that says "surburban". If any one out there has any idea who makes parts for this or what parts interchange and where to get them I'd be grateful.

I have a Woods (3 years old) and a Bush Hog (1 year old). The Bush hog is definitely built better and being rear discharge I don't have to mess with it leaving a windrow in heavy/wet grass and it doesn't have the chute sticking out the side. The woods is a good mower too but a little less durable. I use it as a backup only now that I have the Bush Hog.

Are both of your mowers rear discharge? OR is the Woods a side discharge? My friend has a very old side discharge Woods that is at least 20 years old. He mows a lot of grass, and he has converted it to rear discharge. Woods makes a very good mower. I converted one all so, but when i bought a Grass hopper zero turn mower, it made all the tractor/mowers of any configuration obsolete!!! When i checked out both Woods and Bushhog rear discharge mowers, the Woods won hands down! Robert

The Woods is a side discharge. I think the older Woods that you see on the old Farmall's were/are heavier built than this one. It is a 60" 3 blade finishing mower. I like the Bush Hogh better.

My thanks to all of you. Closest dealer has Land Pride and Bush Hog, next closest is Woods and Bush Hog.

Consider a flail mower, Alamo Mott being the most popular. They're a lot more money, but:

They discharge the clippings evenly.

They chop up the clippings better than a finish mower.

They don't leave the grass long on the tire tracks, because the flails pick the grass back up.

Some are reversible so that you can choose to chop the mulch finer instead of picking up the tire tracks.

They're fairly tolerant of rough ground, rocks and brush.

Flail mowers are far superior to blade type mowers but they cost 2 times as much as a comparable size rotary mower. We use 10' to 15' wide 3- point flails in the almond orchard rows. The downside is individual flails may have to be changed when they are damaged or thrown off. The performance of a properly equipped flail mower could be compared to a reel type mower equiped with a mulcher (if such a creature existed).

I have a 5 foot Befco rear discharge mower that has the ability to rotate gear box left right or around to acommidate multiple deck and push or pull configuration. I suppose some of the other brands have this feature? maybe not! ..... ...But this is not a belly mower.
befco even makes a mower deck that has about a 12 horse honda to drive the deck. You could mow your stuff with a volkswagen bug if that is all you had to pull it with. WWW.befco.com will get you there.

I've owned and used several different brands and models of 3 point finish mowers. "IF" i was buying one for my place, it would absolutely be a rear dicharge, and it would be a Woods brand mower. Second choise would be a Bush Hog brand rear discharge. Good luck on your purchase, Robert

Hi Duane,

I just wanted to clarify my preference for the rear discharge mower. It has nothing to do with the mower clogging up. It has everything to do with the freedom to cut with uncut grass on the left or right. It's a great advantage. Bill

I have a side-discharge Befco 6' mower and while I'd probably go rear discharge all things being equal, it has been very reliable with my Ford 4000. Only cloggin problem has been when mowing very heavy cover with the output facing the uncut grass.

I use a King Kutter 6' model behind my ford 2N. It is really nice. If I let it get a little long, I drop it down to 1st gear, mow once around wide open, and then take little less cut (maybe 4 feet).

Rear discharge would be better, but I only paid 1000 for my new King Kutter...it's held up really well in two years. It is much heavier built thatn most brands.....look at the weight.

take Care
Steve

How hard would it be to modify the KK so as to make it a rear discharge??

I suspect all you'd need to do is cut out the rear end and plug the side discharge. However, that would weaken the mower so you'd want to add a stiffening rib to the top (large angle-iron, maybe?).

You'll want to compare the KK side-discharge to a rear-discharge mower and see if there are any other differences.

If you do this, let me know how it works (I'm not about to try it myself when the mower's working fine the way it is).

I use a Bush Hog 6ft finish mower with the rear discharge. It does a great job. The extra money I spent for the rear discharge was money well spent. I hope I never have to mow again with the side discharge. Bill

I use a 6-ft King Kutter finish mower behind my 2N. I mow in second gear without any problems unless the grass is way higher than it should be for mowing. Then the side discharge tends to clog.

Don't know much about the other brands -- I was extremely cost-sensitive at the time I bought this one new for about $1000 at Mills Fleet Farm.

Rear discharge might be nicer.
