How sucessful is it to weld a knife bar that is broken through a section rivit hole. Mine on my JD #5 broke in this way and I was wondering if it is worth trying to weld it or should I just get a new one?

A good welder can do it as good as new. I was in the same situation & for $5.00, repair was still good 10 years later when I upgraded to a mower/conditioner and sold sickle mower.

Works better if you have a spare piece that you can weld in so that the weld comes in the middle of a section, instead of in a hole. If you have to weld through the hole fill it completely and drill it out afterward.

I have had very little luck welding these jsut too little metal. Then again I may not be that good a welder. Think it would make sense to cut out a piece and splice one in so you don't have the break in the middle of a rivet hole.

A good idea is to move the broken chunk to the far end.

Usually the broken chunk IS the far end. I shouldn't try to mow so close to the stone wall.
