OK, When the twine finger/bill hook is holding the ends of the twine during the tying operation and eventual stripping operation, should the string be free to slide in between there, or what? My manuel says that there should be some tension but not too much on the twine. I've set the spring tension on the twine finger, but the twine is still loose between there. Is something severely worn out, or should there not be any pinch on the twine? From what I gather from the manual, there should be some, but not too much. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I would say yes, it should hold it securely. Did you set tension with a scale, should take 5-15# to open 1/8".

mark do you have a picture in your manual of the internal area where the knots are tied?

yes, I checked the tension but it seems that I can slide twine through the gap between the bill hook & finger. Could the bill hook be so worn that the little nub on the end of the finger creates too much gap between there? I hate to just go buy a new bill hook if that won't help.

Mark, We may have a terminology issue here. The billhook has a tongue that helps to hold the twine while the knot is being tied. The Fingers are the flat slightly curved pieces of metal that are mounted to the bale chamber. The finger gathers the twine from the needle and holds it against the billhook as the billhook turns and the tongue opens and catches the two pieces of twine. If you have a video camera you can line up the two knotters and get a video while you slowly turn the fly wheel and see the difference. This is very helpful since you have one knotter that is tying every time. A worn billhook is typically known for knots hanging than loose knots. Now tongue tension will cause loose knots but more typically you will see loops than string ends. Try the video trick and see what you see from that. You say you set it up. What settings have you adjusted AND MEASURED. You need 15lbs of twine tension at the end of the needle. 90-120lbs of twine disk tension and 15lbs of tongue force to pull the tongue up 1/8 of an inch. Check out the instructions on adjusting the twine fingers and how to align them with the edge of the opening that the needles come up through. Let us know what happens.
