I see a lot of talk about moldboard turning plows but little if any about disk type plows.

Can anyone tell me the pros and cons of a disk type turning plow. In 1948, my father bought a new Ford 8N with a 2-bottom disk type plow. I "assume" this was a Dearborn plow but I cannot be sure.

The disks were about 18 to 24 inches in diameter. I plowed many, many acres of river bottom land (both loam & clay in Arkansas with this plow. It worked very well. I never had a problem trying to set up the plow as the disks did not have a tendency to either dig in or come out of the ground. I ran in draft mode.

I would appreciate any comments as this happened many years ago and I have forgotten a lot about farming after living in the city for the last 40 years!!!

BEFORE THE DAYS OF TRIP BEAM TURNING PLOWS, A LOT OF DISK PLOWS WERE SOLD IN EAST TN. THE HM-150 WAS SOLD WITH 2 DISKS FIOR THE H AND 3 FOR THE M. THIS SOIL WAS EITHER VERY HARD RED CLAY(DID NOT SHED WELL) OR HAD ROCK NEAR THE SURFACE. PROBABLY THE BEST EVER ESPECIALLY IN CLEARING NEW GROUND WAS AN F-30 ON STEEL PULLING A 3 DISK #47 PLOW THAT HAD 28" CUT OUT DISKS. IT WOULD CUT SPROUTS AS BIG AS YOUR LEG ALL DAY LONG. WITH THE COMING OF TRIP BEAM PLOWS AND FAST HITCH A LOT OF FARMALL 560'S WITH A TWO POINT #311 PLOW WERE USED (3 16" BOTTOMS)DISK PLOWS REQUIRED A LOT OF BUILT IN WEIGHT TO WORK GOOD THUS THOSE WITH TWO OR THREE POINT HITCHES NEVER WORKED WELL IN THIS AREA. TODAY I WOULD BUY A TRIP BEAM FLAT BOTTOM. HOPE THIS HELPS
