Anyone out there have a ballpark estimate on how much one of these is worth?
It's in reasonably good running condition; 2-wire type. Runs on a 4-cylinder Continental gasoline engine. Probably needs a headgasket. Pulls behind a tractor.
A guy wants to sell it. We might want to buy it, but neither knows what price tag to put on it.
Thanks in advance.

I felt that the 55 baler was a fair machine in it's day. Think it made pretty good bales due to the long bale chamber. Not high capacity by any means and not up to baling hay from a 12 or bigger foot swather. Price wise don't think I would pay over $100 , in my area of Washington there are a lot of them sitting around collecting rust.

Mrs JR:

The IHC 45t and 55 series balers were made in the 1950s and at that time were regarded by most people as not being the best machinerey, but sunce they were painted red and sold at IHC a lot of red blooded Farmall types bought them anyway.

This 55w, with a continental engine might be worth something to a Farmall collector who could paint it up really nice, get it so that it generally might work sometimes, and then hook it up behind a really pretty red IHC f300 or f350 at a show. People would gawk at it and be really impressed!

If what You want to do is bale hay, however, there are only TWO (2) brands of older balers which a sensible person would ever consider.
They are JOHN DEERE, either a 14t, a 24t or a 224t, and NEW HOLLAND. As I am a JOHN DEERE man myself I recommend GREEN paint, and I am not really all that familiar with the exact model numbers of older NH balers---#66 or #68 comes to mind but someone else will have to say for sure. At anyrate, either brand of older balers (newer ones too) will still have great parts support and the balers themselves were highly regarded by about everyone when they were new and in fact are STILL highly regarded to the present day.

Do yourself a favor and let some collector have the 55w and get yourself a REAL baler, one you will like and will be happy with.

That is my opinion.

Jim and Dan...
Thanks for your opinions and information about this McCormick baler.
I really appreciate your taking the time to add comments.
Based on all of your experience, we think it would be best to pass on this machine and keep looking. Maybe we'll find one of those John Deere or New Holland models for not too much money.
Thanks again....you've all been great!

Saw one of those sell at auction in May near here. Had been in a shed unused for 25 years, but generally good shape. Sold for $30. Buyer took off engine, scrapped the rest. In my opinion, not worth trying to bale hay with one, much newer and better machines available.

Thanks for your response, Tim.
I'm interested in this machine mostly because it's available. (don't need to search for a newer, better model).
That $30 doesn't seem like much for one of these old workhorses. A local hay grower who I happened to see at the local Ace Hardware store (since my first posting), said that he saw one of these awhile back that was in pretty good shape priced at $1700.00.
So now I'm kinda stumped. $30 to $1700 is quite a range.
Anyone else have an opinion?

Priced at $1700 doesn't necessarily mean sold for $1700. I know where there is an old New Idea horsedrawn manure spreader that has been sitting for 2 years with a for sale sign with a price of $1500 on it. All the wood needs to be replaced on it, and the rest is rusted. Apparently, nobody around here thinks it's worth $1500 except the seller.

Well....'guess it's like someone once said: If you pay that much for it, then it's worth that much. Or something along those lines.
Thanks again, Tim...and have a good summer.
