NH 270 working hard

First year to operate 270 I picked up on an auction last fall. Put some straw through it last night. It made very nice bales, but seemed to work the tractor awfully hard, which is an 80+ hp ford 7700. It seemed on the packing stroke of the ram, at full extension, the tractor would drop almost 200rpm, which is excessive, as I've been using a neighbors large oliver wire tie which didn't even work it half as hard. Will this baler suck the power if you are packing the bales to tight? My theory is that their is not much flywheel inertia so the tractor is absoring all the inertial loads, or is something wrong? It does have a minor clunk for each stroke but nothing that seems to be out of the ordinary. What are your thoughts.

One more thought on this along with the other suggestions. Straw sometimes bales hard, especially if not real dry. Sharp and well adjusted knives make a lot of difference

Like some of the others said, big variables are:
Knife sharp? Real biggie.
Knife adjusted correctly? Op manual shows how.
Packing bales too tight?
What you're baling wet or tough?

Good luck, a good running NH is worth a bit of checking.

BJ I own a 268 which had been kept in a barn with hay in the bale chamber for quite a number of years. The first few weeks I used it, it was all my 42hp tractor could handle, and went through a pile of shear pins. As things got worked in and scale rust in the chamber wore smooth the power requirements dropped dramaticly as did the consumption of shear pins. Good luck with the new baler. Roy

bj, I run my 270 with an IHC 300, about 38 horsepower. Seems to be a real good match. Packing wet alfalfa or a 20 foot wide raked straw patch, it is noticable on the tractor, but slip clutch or shear pin go pretty quickly at that point.

I wouldn't even bother putting the 270 on my 7700, wouldn't want to waste the hp. ;)

I don't know what to say about yours. Were you feeding it very heavy, were you busting apart old bales of straw & feeding the flakes in heavy? That can take some power for the knife to cut those flakes up again. Is the knife sharp?

Chamber shear knives sharp and at proper clearance ? Bale density ok ?

That's about all you have to fool with in the load department.
