Any experiences running haypine with compact tractor? What would be horsepower minimums for 8 or 9 ft. haybine? Thanks for any info.

A friend runs his NH472 7' cut haybine behind a 1710 Ford compact 4wd. I think it is around 25-27 hp. He cuts in the range of 2500 bales a year and the little Ford is his only tractor. Alot depends on how fast you want to mow and what your terrain is like. If you can slow down and have reasonably flat ground you can get away with a smaller power unit. Roy

A friend used a JD 530 to run a older 7 foot NH haybine back in the 80's.

I run a 489 New Holland haybine (9') with a MF 165 tractor (rated at 52 HP). It works good, but I do not think I would ever go any smaller. When your cutting in heavy hay, it takes all she's got. You are better to error on the side of being a little too big, than too small.
My two cents worth.

We have a NH 479 haybine (9ft) that is escorted by our Ford 801, also around 50 hp (when new) and it has done fine for the last 5 years. I don't think I would go with anything that weights less though, they are a load to move around.

I've got a 9' haybine, can use it with my Ford 960 (50 hp) but prefer something bigger. They take a fair amount of power, and also some weight to manhandle them around.

Depends on the field conditions you are in too of course. I'm in hills, heavy alfalfa, pocket gopher piles, etc.
