I have a NH 282 baler I just purchased. It seems to be in good shape and knots well. I have a problem breaking shear bolts in the main drive gear. When that bolt breaks then the flywheel one goes also. The bolt shears when the tine bar is on the return stroke and on top of the right gear. I can't see that it hits anything. I was baling dry grass hay today when I had the problem. It will go a while then shear. Doesn't seem like the baler is overly full of hay when it does and nothing hard. Any suggestions?

The 3 main causes are

1. dirty knotters
2. knotter brakes not holding
3.too much slack in the knotter drive gear.

By it shearing on the tine return I would almost bet that the knotter brake is slipping and letting the knotters drift from the home position..

When it shears the knotter safety bolt it does'nt lift the plunger safety and that's what shears the flywheel bolt.

That should have been a 282 baler not 822. Not shearing the knotter safety bolt and needles not dropping into chamber. Shears bolt in main drive gear then flywheel. I have not had to remove needle safety stop from chamber afterwards. Also happens at different times in cycle, not after a tie or like that. Will check brake though. \Thanks for the help

You're right I got side tracked and answered the wrong question.

That sounds more like the pickup and/or feeder tine is binding.

Check the pickup reel to be sure the slip clutch is working. Check to be sure the tines chain is tight too. If it gets too loose it can break the chains or shear the drive bolts.

The shear bolt on the auxiliary drive(guess that is what it is really called) goes though a steel bushing and it woas work a bit so I replaced it. Fortunately NH parts are cheap compared to some others and the busing was only $5. Think also the rh corner of the top of the baler has dropped down a bit and allows the tine bar to hit on the metal occasionally, will fix the problems by second cutting anyway(if we get one this year). Thanks for the assist

I used some 1/4" X 2" angle iron to fix mine. You can hide the repair under the sheetmetal and it's stronger than when it was new. Good luck.
