Yes I have a manual and no it doesn't make any sense to me. I don't understand the purpose for the big coil spring that causes the mower to bounce uncontrollably if it gets lifted off the ground. Yes I have it bolted to the lift arms and yes I also use a stabilizer bar also. I guess I'm just too dumb to see the obvious. I'll go read the manual again. It cuts great, it just can't be manuevered very easily because it flaps like a bird wing when the bar gets lifted even an inch off the ground. The hay's all cut for this go-round. Hopefully I'll get it figured out when it comes time to cut again next month. Thanks anyway.

Jim, this may not be your problem but. does your mower have a lock that you have to release before you can fold the blade up? my JD mower has, it has always been a pain to deal with. but after reading your post i think i now understand what the lock is for. the one on my mower will allow the arm to swing up about 3 feet before the lock stops upward motion. the lock is located near the arm pivot. seems it is "L" shaped. sorry for vageness but i have not used my mower for several years

After reading your post this noon at work, I had to come home and see how my 9W is set up before answering, as I experience a little bar bounce, but not nearly any 'flapping'. Anyway, reference the manual page 23 picture H7502, my adjusting bracket is as high as it will go, and I've attached the lower end of the spring into hole 'E', despite what the book suggests. I remember experimenting for some time last year (the 1st year with the mower) before getting the settings where they are. HTH Steve 8N 169302

Thanks, Steve. That sounds promising. I'll look at the manual page you reference. Thanks for taking the time to look into my problem.

Take some tension off the float spring.

I assume you are saying the same thing as Steve. I'll get into the manual to see what I can do about that. Thanks.

Just another thought. I wonder if the little flywheel the pitman stick is bolted to is out of balance, or maybe a loose bearing. I have a No. 9 mower and have had it mounted on a Farmall 400 and now use it on a JD 50 with no flapping like a bird. Good luck.

Thanks for the tip. Don't think that's it because this flapping motion I'm talking about happens with the pto off. I don't dare raise the mower with the pto on because it bounces so much that I'm sure I'd break the pitman. BTW, this happens with the tractor at a dead stop, too.
