When to cut oats

I planted about 2 acres of oats this spring with the hopes of making straw. It is about 18 inches high now and I am wondering when to cut it. I am not looking to harvest the oats. How many bales should I expect?

This is how I did it last year. When the oats have just set head and are in milk stage, cut them. They need to lay out in the sun for about 4 or 5 days with no rain (a problem sometimes in New Jersey as you probably know) with a few teddings and a raking or two to get the green out of them. I baled mine and it looked almost white, like rye straw, not the usual golden color. Had no problem selling it.

If you kept some green color in it, wouldn't you get a whole lot more for it as oat hay? Pretty high protien in it at that stage to just bleach it into something for them to lay on....

But then, us farmers need to not be so practical, & sell what the market is willing to pay for, not sell for what we are producing maybe. :)

Yeah, I know. . . it hurt me to bleach it out like that . . . but there aren't many cows left around here and the horsey set doesn't like oat HAY, would only have gotten $1.50 a bale for it if I could sell it at all (probably would have been trucked out to Pennsylvania). However, oat STRAW is in demand by the horsey set and I got $2.50 a bale for that nice white stuff.

If you cut it before it's ripe, any critters I have will eat it long before they lay on it. The only way to really get straw is to let it get ripe, take the grain out, & then bale it.

further north here in ct, oats dont get combined till early to mid august if that helps. you wnat the stem completely dry and want to harvest before weeds overcome it.

You might just as well wait for the oats to mature and harvest them, because you can't really get straw until the grain matures and the stalks quit growing. If you harvest inmature grain it is more like a grass than anything.
