JD #9 sickle mower question

I notice in a post below someone suggesting raising the mower when driving over mowed hay to avoid clogging the mower. I'd love to do that, but I've never been able to figure out how to do it with this mower. I've read the manual and still can't get it right. If I raise the three point to where the mower comes off the ground it starts flapping like a big one-winged bird and won't stop until I put it back on the ground. What am I doing wrong with the set up on this thing? Thanks.

Try adjusting the length of your top link. It sounds like your draft feedback is not quite right.

The manual should say something about the gearboz being about 12 or 13 inches off the ground when mowing.

OK, I'm really going to show my inexperience (aka stupidity) now. Should I be mowing in draft mode? I've been using position control setting on the 3ph. I thought draft feedback only came into play in draft mode which I thought was only used for things like plowing, etc. I'm ready to learn. Thanks in advance

I don't think draft mode is necessary or desirable; I can't recall offhand if the op manual says anything about that. But you want the mower set to the proper height and angle of attack, which the top link length does affect.

If you don't have the Deere operator manual and parts books you should get them ASAP. They made setting up our 9W a whole bunch easier. Any Deere guy should be able to get them for you for a few bucks. Or maybe they can be ordered over the 'net these days. But they are worth every penny.

As far as sway bars go, our 9W bolts up to the lift arms on our MH50 in a manner that accomplishes the same thing. It doesn't flop around laterally once the U bolts that fasten to the lift arms get tightened up.

The U bolts didn't come with the thing. I hot formed some redi rod and it's worked fine ever since.

It was a real fight getting that 9W bolted up the first time that I did it, but gadzooks that thing could mow hay once it was set.

We've mowed many thousands of bales with a 9W on a Ford 8N. Always used position control. It was a bit of a chore to take it off the tractor so we finally got another 8N and leave the mower on year round most years.

Do you have sway bars on your 3 point arms? Call Deere and order an operators manual, it will be really helpfull in setting up this mower.
