OK, I fixed the knotter trip I referred to in a previous post. It knots great.
But the bales it makes...well, they're skewed. Like there's more material on one side than another, causing them to want to "blow out" when you pick them up. We've played with the tensioners A LOT, I don't think that's the problem. Any opinions?
I am purposefully not going to tell you anything else about it (what's broke, etc.) so as not to taint your answers. And yes, I'll be getting the manual soon, but not soon enough to make hay tonight!!
Please Help!
Thanks in advance,
- Jim H.

I am pretty sure the promblem is the the knives.
Take them out and have them sharpen. A friend of mind had this same promblem and after trying several things this corrected the promblem.

I have a lot of experience with NH 273 balers.
#1 Check the hay dogs - must be free and have good springs. The dogs hold the hay tight in the chamber.
#2 Sharpen knives - If knives are not sharp hay moves back into the feeder and does not stay in the chamber.
#3 Check the feeder tines - must not be missing or broken.
Also when you are baling keep the windrow to the outside of the pickup - this allows more compaction in the pickup area. Also full uniform windrows make better bales. Lastly stick with NH balers - they are the best.

jim i have a super 78 simular but bigger i think you said that you messed with the tensioners if they are not even that can cause a crooked bale sometimes. the fingers on the arm that carries the hay into the chamber can come loose and slide and cause it and there should be four spring loaded "dogs" in the chamber that keep the hay from sliding back towards the plunger if they are missing or the springs are broke mabey that will help. by the way when mine is right she will lay out some pretty bales just needs tlc ocasionaly

Jim,

Sorry to hear that. I don't know anything about balers, but I do wish you the best of luck.

Greg

Jim: One, likely, source of the problem is the forks that drag the hay from the pickup into the bale chamber. Especially if the set of forks that is nearest the chamber are broken, or if something is broken so that they flop back and do not push the hay into the chamber, the problem you describe will result.

I have a super 69 and it never made a nice bale. I have friends that have John Deere 14T and 24T balers and they always make a nice bale

short soft hay sometimes will bale that way, get your windrows bigger and try going a little faster to get more hay into the baler.happy baling, Pappy

Jim One thing that wasn't mentioned below was the hay dogs. They sit just behind the knotters, on the bale chamber. I beleve there is one on each side on the top and one in the center on the bottom. Check that they are not seized in place or that the springs are not broken. The front 4 feeder tines are aluminum and wear after years of use. Try to get a look at a new set, you may be surprised how short yours have become. Good luck with the haying. 2-3 weeks before we start here. Roy

dear jim, My dad hade the same baler you have and his dad had it before him, and i think i may have and awnser for your problem if you run over your hay with you tractor tire just a little and get the hay on the side closest to the plunger it makes a lot sqarer bales. our knoter did the same thing and so my dad got rid ot the New Hollend baler and bought a john deere baler it does a lot better job and saved him a lot of money.

I've never been around NH balers before but I have been around John Deere and IH. My Uncle bought an IH 46 new when I was in High School. We baled 1200 bales per day for 26 days straight with it. When it gave us this kind of trouble it was the forks that pulled the hay into the chamber from the cross auger. There's an adjustment on it that lengthens or shortens the throw on these forks that will pull the hay farther to one side of the bale chamber or closer to the near side. It will make "banana" bales either way.
