New Old NH 273 Wire Baler hay jams and knives...

Hi,

I bought a NH 273 at a farm sale (spent waay too much) and am attempting to get it going. I have two problems with it (so far).

I've been doing test runs with it, and it picks up the hay well, but the hay tends to get packed in the top of the baler, and I have to stop and unclog it. Looking at the beast, (no wonder so many people get killed by these things), there are only 3 pins/forks moving the hay from the top feed into the square chamber. Seems like there should be more. Or, could it be that the hay is too dry?

Also, I'm trying to figure out how to properly sharpen and adjust the knives. It looks to me that the design snags the wire, holds it while the bale passes through underneath, snips and ties the wire. The knives have a little bevel to them. The instructions on the baler say to "sharpen using normal methods" or something helpful to that effect. The wire is a little rusty, and one of the pulleys on the bottom of the baler has siezed, which I will have to fix.

I am getting the manual BTW, I'd thought I'd try this community while I wait.

Thanks!

My 270 is smaller capacity, but only has 3 forks also. Two cast aluminumn, & one springloaded one. This works well in everything but old rained-on straw that is so rotty & brittle it packs in instead of feeding over.

Any type of fresh hay should be working, if it is anything like a 270. Would you be feeding too fast, or would the hay be extremely short?

Well, it *is* pretty dry coastal burmuda I'm playing with. It's not brittle, really, and it's long enough. The other thing is that I'm just getting it off the ground while I'm working on attaching my rake--no windrow. When it jams I made a windrow from the jam to see if I could get anything to go while I figure this out.

I'll cut some more rake it properly and get it earlier.
