If I planted corn for a deer and wild turkey food plot would cultivating do a good enough job keeping weeds out or do I need to spray?
Thanks Mark

If your just planting it for the deer and turkeys, pheasants & so forth, not harvesting it, you might not need to woory about the weeds at all. If you fertilize you will get one solid block of green, that the wildlife will love. Yields will not matter.

Spraying to control weeds is only about 30 years old. Cultivators were used before that time with excellent weed control often a field which has been only cultivated has better weed control than a sprayed field.

Don't forget to harrow as it sprouts, or rotory hoe a few times, that takes the weeds out of the row, gives the corn a good head start.

As it sprouts, use a spike harrow set shallow - - - don't try it with a spring tooth!

Mark, Cultivating will take care of your weed problems fine. You might have to do until the corn reaches about a foot high or so. Maybe 2 or 3 cultivations. Remember when cultivators were made for our old tractors they didn't spray at all or very little. Good Luck and get started on the right rows or you'll wipe out some plants.

talk about wild trukeys, got 2 nests in hay field , wiped 'em out with haybine---Yah, i call that good luck espically when they are running around in big numbers, like flocks of 40-50 birds each!!!.
