All,

Please chime in. I have a damaged ball coupler welded to my trailer. No replacement parts are available. It"s a welded, not bolted item.

If you were to cut off and weld a new ball coupler, which brand would you cjose?

I think the BullDog brand has a following, but the sideways clamp, well I am unsure of. I use a three point hitch and like to back to my trailer, then lift the 3 point to get it. The sideways bulldog does not seem to allow that.

Perhaps I am mistaken, but I may end up replacing the existing for the same hitch, model 81911 atwoood.

Thanks in advance,

D.

Bulldogs are the best in my opinion. I move trailers around with the coupler unlatched. Only the older couplers will fully open.
I once pulled a trailer 6 miles with the coupler unlatched before it bounced off.

I have a house trailer hitch on a home-made round bale trailer, and I chose it because it is self latching. I can raise the ball into it and drive away with it securely latched. I welded a ring to the latch lever so I can unlatch it from the tractor seat and drive away. Some of them won't "self latch". I don't remember seeing a name on my hitch - just the load rating info, but I'll walk by and look today.

I have always found that if the trailer is not perfectly lined up with the ball, a Bulldog style coupler can be hard to close and latch. Especially as it gets older.

I would take it to my local welding shop and have hem replace it with whatever they have in stock. They are not that complicated and if they do it, their insurance company helps if it breaks.

Yes, I have a side latch Bulldog on my flat trailer. I move it around all the time with the 3 point and unlatched.

I don't know what you mean by the Bull Dog not allowing you to pick a trailer up with a bal on the 3pt. If you mean pick it up and pull it without latching then you are probly right. That cast latch could be broken pretty easy if it's not latched. But if the latch is open you could easily pick up the tongue and then latch the coupler before you try to pull it. I can't see any reason that won't work, I even move trailers around the yard a bit without latching sometimes but you would have to be careful. That being said the Bull Dog is my favorite for heavy couplers, both 2" and 2 5/16". They last forever and will take more abuse than anything else I've found.

That is the same size as used on ALL mobile homes and are common as dirt at least on my place I probably have at least 10 of them laying around. That is also the same size as the goose neck hook up. Should not be hard to find one but be sure you get one rated for at least half again as much as you plan to pull to be on the safe side
