Which rake to get

Im trying to decide which rake to buy. Both are $1000 which is the going price in Maine for a decent side delivery rake. They are both 8 foot and in equal condition. One is a International I think #35? and it has mini pto that turns the rake part and the other is a adco (new idea) and has a belt that drives the rake part. The international you can pull a rope to disengage from turning but the new idea you cant. Some say the belt is the way to go and some say its not. The international seemed slightly heavier built (rugged).

Thanks
Mike

Hi, I have a New Idea 402 belt rake, they have 5 bars and do a good job. They are much cheaper to buy than the NH 56 and 256's. The price sounds a little high unless they have been fixed up. Most old rakes I see for that price have been painted and have new rake teeth and the bearings at the end of the bars are good. The bar bearings are about $20 and the belt $110. Bill

Well I bought the new idea. I may have changed my mind if I read the belt was $110 but its too late. They were both 5 bar and both equally rugged. I thought the international was more rugged but it was the same. The international needed 30 teeth and all the u-joints seemed quite sloppy. He would not budge from $1000. The new idea was in better shape and had all original teeth and needed only 2. The paint was very good original and I got it for $900 with some spare teeth. I talked to people that said the tires will drag before the belt slips. It was a tough decision and Im still uncertain about it. The International had an offset axle with u-joints on each end to bring one tire in closer to the slanted rake. the new idea had straight axle like most others Ive seen. A lot more moving parts it seemed with the international. Is the offset axle better for some reason for future reference?

I have a friend who has a belt driven New Idea rake. It's the quietest running rake I've ever seen. That belt should last you a long time. Write the belt number down while you can still read it. You can probably find the belt a lot cheaper at an industrial supply house. Good luck with your new rake.

Your New Idea will do fine. There are several around here that have been working for decades.

Offset wheels give you better ground gauging of the bars on rough ground. However, offset wheels mean the axle has an extra pair of U-joints to worry about.

If you can put that New Idea inside when not in use, the belt will last a lot longer.

Mike,
Avco New Idea cut a lot of corners making farm equipment. They generally are lighter built and belt type drive rakes will occasionally slip in real heavy windrows. I would buy the IH rake.

Is either rake a 5-bar rake? If so, get 5 over 4, and otherwise, I'd get the "pto". (I assume you mean that there is a "pto" type drive shaft from the rear wheels to some kind of gearbox, which turns the "basket" of the rake.) IHC > NI, 5>4, and pto > belt. Also, remember that whichever rake, they are both used and either may have been sold for a "reason"! Good luck.

Around here, the Avco/New Idea rakes are near impossible to get a bid on at the consignment auctions. The local auction lot has one that has been there for a year! The darn thing looks like it works and everything too. What sells are the John Deere 640s and New Holland 56 & 256 rakes. They sell for what you are suggesting or a bit more, depending on condition and features (dolly wheel models are much more popular than the semi-integral ones which have a jackstand.) IH rakes don't sell much better than the New Idea rakes, but they do sell a little better. If those were MY choices, and without having actually seen them, I lean towards the red one.

The International happens to be white. My main question is do I go with the one with the belt, or the one that has pto shaft.

You made the right choice. I have a International 35 and have never been happy with it. It looks to be made just about like a NH but they changed it enough to screw it up. I have broken PTO shaft twice. Splined shaft from left drive wheel once and all failures are due to the drive wheels producing a hesitation in rotation when under load instead of a nice smooth drive. I bought an old NH and will rebuild it to produce a reliable rake. Don't see NI much here in western Iowa.

Im glad to here that Dick. If it werent for the major slop in some of them u-joints I would have got it . I thought the offset wheels were a better set up but I will have to get by with the NI. I have flat ground anyway and only about 1000 bales a year to do. I will keep undercover! Thanks for all your help.
