Got my jd #8 sickle mower going today and gave it a quick try (in very wet grass) did a nice job through the five inch grass but clogged when it got into the 10 inch stuff. When I looked at it the blades and shears need some adjustment. Do these things work in long wet grass or can I expect clogging. Will adjust the guards tomorrow.
Any help is appreciated.

I had the same problem that you are having. I replaced everything. Checked and rechecked all that could be checked. About to give up when some old fart told me to set the front of the sickle bar so it is pointing upward. I had set it level with the ground. I adjusted the front of the points to be about 1/2" higher, and it work like a dream. I guess them old people are good for something.

One of the biggest problems with sickle bar mowers is when over time someone has replaced the wooden pittman piece, they didn't measure exactly and the knives are not in time. To be in time the center point of the knife needs to be in the center of a guard at the extreme end of the travel of the mower section. I have seen this to be more of a problem than folks think.

Like the others said, wet is worse than dry.

Get an operator's manual if you don't already have one and be sure the knife register is correct and that the rest of it is lined up right.

I agree with the other guys about grass being dry. I'd make sure you have sharp knives and good guards - especially for smaller fine stuff. I've also found if you have new guards they work better when the paint has worn off. Also the tilt on the knife bar makes a difference. When the points on the guards are more down than up they will plug up easier in small stuff.

Sickle mowers work better in dry conditions.

For me they work better in longer grass than short - but not lodged grass.

Fine wet grass is the worst - just won't work.

Adjust your speed - sometimes faster is better, sometimes slower.

Getting that extended double section out on the end does help if you are clogging on the very end.

A couple of thoughts:

(1) If this mower was originally set up for a stemmier crop, the knives may be too aggressive for grass. I've had better luck with very small teeth or "worn out" knives on grass. You want to shear it, not grab it.

(2) There's a company in Germany that makes what I'd call a "knife and a half" for the end of the bar. This seems to push the grass out better than a regular knife. I've gotten them from Southern States Coop and from Tractor Supply in the past.

Try it in dry grass and if it works, you are in luck. If not, I would suggest getting an operators manual and parts manual. There are settings for the cutter bar and also positioning it on the tractor covered in the operators manual that deal with these things. Call JD at 800-522-7448 to order the manuals. Good luck.

What kind of grass? If it's a thin stringy kind, like bluegrass, then forget it. That kind of grass is only going to work when it's dry. Although, sickle mowers will clog on just about anything. You don't want to drive too slow, as the stuff will set on the bar, too fast, and it won't cut good. Too wet, and it won't work. Bet it'll work much better when the grass is dry.
