I am considering purchasing a New Holland 850 round baler and I am wonder if anyone
would like to offer some advise on how god this
baler might be. I would like to know about what
horsepower of a tractor that it might take to
bale with this baler. Thanks, JACKEY

this is new hollads first large round baler. actually, it can make a pretty tight bale. newer designs offered less bale density. but as mentioned, the chains will wear but if you use the baler for only a few hundred bales a year, maybe you can get by.

Have a Big wallet. The chains and sprockets and cross bars for these machines cost a fortune. A 560 works good on one of these.

They are expensive to rebuild but if you find one in good shape (or get it rebuilt) you should have a good machine (New Holland equipment is fairly strong). Check the chains and sprockets for excessive wear. If the baler has had an automatic chain oiler put onto it that is a plus...it cuts the wear down considerably. I bought a used one a few years ago, from a fellow who previously baled several thousand bales with it. Other than the floor chains and the pickup teeth needing replacing, it's served me well. It's not the kind of baler that you can drive down the field with the swath going into the center of the baler. You've got to pay attention to how much hay goes into each side of the baler otherwise you'll end up with lopsided bales. Initially I used a 60 hp gas tractor on the baler but found it was a bit too hard on the tractor baling uphill in heavy hay. I now use an 85 hp diesel and it's quite adeqate.
