Hi all,

I bought a IH #46 baler at an auction Saturday. This is the first time I have ever owned a baler. After reading all the posts I could find about this model, it looks like it should do me just fine baling between 6 and 12 acres behind my Farmall 560.

I'll be ordering the manuals for it tomorrow from the local Case/IH dealer, but before they come in, what should I be looking for and checking out to get this old baler ready to run?

Also, can anybody tell me the year this thing was manufactured? The serial number is 32469 E.

Thanks

Keith B

Check to make sure the "safety dogs" for the twine needles are free. These dogs pop up into the chamber and stop the plunger from hitting the needles should the neddles stay in the chamber as is the case when you break the shear bolt on the knotter. My "46" cents... Jim

I'm one of the people with a model 46 who has posted here before and I think they are an excellent baler. I don't know the exact year of yours but they were made in the 1960's. The later versions were modified a bit to accept a bale thrower. I never had serious problems with mine but two things you could check - make sure the twine cutting knives are sharp. They are easy to get off and sharpen. The other thing is the springs on the 4 hay retainers (two in top and two on the bottom). Mine lost them and I had tying problems until I found they were missing and replaced them. You manual will show where they are. Its made to use sisal twine, not plastic. With the 560 make sure you don't run the PTO too fast. It tells in the manual but I think the rpms are susposed to be 60-70 strokes per minute. At this speed in a big windrow one person won't be able to keep up on the wagon.

Where are those hay retainer springs? Maybe that's what my tying problem is.

Each knotter has one top and bottom. They keep the compressed hay from backing up when the plunger is moving out of the chamber. If the hay moves backwards the string gets loose and doesn't get grabbed by the knotter. Look behind the knotter asssembly and just in front of the plate that is between the knotter and the arm that pulls the hay in. They are just to the right of each knotter if you're facing the tractor. The lower ones are between the needles at the point where the needles go through the bottom. Since they go up and down each time the plunger goes in and out you should hear them clicking if they have a good spring. The baler will miss a lot of bales if the springs are missing.
